"Salvage yard" (?) in Sidcup, South East London

Hi

I have recently had the suspension of my front wheel fixed, and I set off to get a tyre shop to have a look at the damaged wheel. My idea is to use is the damaged one, after fixing, as a spare one. Hence I am not too concerned about it not being "perfect". The car as a whole is not worth much as well.
:money:
The guy looking at the tyre said he can normally try and fix the rim, but that the damage was too extensive this time. He told me to try and look at some junkyards to try and reclaim a spare wheel from scrapped car.
:money:
Now, I have been trying to narrow down a few places to visit in the vicinity of where I live. Unsuccessfully.

I don't seem to be able to use the search mechanism at yell or on the internet as a whole to my advantage. Part of the confusion seems to be caused by my choice of term. What is the correct wording for this type of business?

Car dismantlers? Junkyards? Car salvage? Car scrappers?

It doesn't matter what I choose, I don't seem to be able to find any in the South East of London, around Eltham/Sidcup. I was expecting this to be an area where one can find plentiful, as it is not exactly central.

Does anybody have any pointers for the search, or any actual "salvage yard" (?) to recommend? :A

Thanks again
Chris

Why not ask the tyre guy who he recommends?

    Breakers. Tried ebay?

Try a search for the tyre size on eBay, maybe adding the word wheel

Many thanks for this very useful website!

I have used the website to get a quote (not 100% sure about the part name - I chose "steel wheel X 1").

I'm being quoted £40 for a used wheel, excluding delivery, how does that sound? Note it's not "Abbey Car Breakers" quoting, but "A1 Jap Spares" a business in Manchester.

Many thanks for the pointer. I'll give "Abbey Car Breakers" a call to check whether I can get it cheaper - also I can drive to their site which should save me some money on the delivery. :money:

I really wanted to give the ebay idea a shot, but I am at a loss as to how to determine the exact type of wheel I need. Can I look at the wheel itself to determine?

My manual reads as follows. Note references to compact spare tyres should not matter, as the spare tyre is not compact - it's the same as all others:

    Tires
    Tire size:
    Compact spare tire
    T115/70D14
    T125/70D14
    Except compact spare tire
    P175/65SR14
    P185/65SR14
Tire pressure, kPa (kgf/cm 2 or bar, psi):
    Compact spare tire
    420 (4.2, 60)
    Except compact spare tire
    210 (2.1, 30)
    Wheel size:
    Compact spare tire
    14 X 4T
    Except compact Spare tire
    14 X 5.5JJ

    Wheel nut torque, N·m (kgf·m, ft·lbf):
    102.9 (10.5, 76)
NOTE: For a complete information on
tires (e.g. replacing tires or re-
    placing wheels), see “Checking
    tire pressure” through “Aluminum
    wheel precautions” in Section 7–2.

I have tried on ebay - http://goo.gl/yr68Gz, by using "14 5.5JJ" in the search box - some are significantly cheaper :money: than the quoted £40+pp, but I don't think those are compatible.

Thanks for any inputs, this is all very new to me.

    need more detail -
you mention you searched using 'steel wheel' but the handbook extract you posted says 'aluminum wheel'
    is it an american car?
which type of wheel do you have?

As previous poster, telling us make amd model would make life a lot simpler...
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Toyota corolla vvti 1400cc petrol 5 door hatchback 2000 manual.

Not sure how to determine whether it's aluminum or steel - assume steel from the amount of rust?

    I received a quote for £15 + £10 shipping for a steel one, which doesn't look too bad. :T

For some reason the post got cancelled.

I was inquiring about the tyre installation procedure, as evinced by the reply below.
