Can I claim Working Tax Credit while doing an apprentiship?

Hi there,

I'm a single woman of 34 with no children and have recently applied to do a Dental Nurse apprentiship, which is 37.5 hours a week and pays £2.68 an hour.

I was wondering as to whether I would qualify to claim working tax credit? Does anyone know?

    It depends on the terms of the apprenticeship.

    If you have a contract of employment for the apprenticeship and the payments you received are classed as earnings and subject to tax and NI then it will count.

    But if you receive a non-taxable training allowance then it won't qualify as work for WTC.

    The definitive answer is as I posted above. You need to be in remunerative work to claim WTC. If you get a non-taxable training allowance you are not counted as in remunerative work. It is covered in the WTC entitlement and maximum rate regulations 2002.
