young driver insurance

Our son has just passed his driving test, 5 weeks before he is 18 :-)

However, having used Collingwood Insurance for while he was learning (good price!), I am wondering whether any others found "reasonable priced" insurance for new drivers. I've done some searching here with no luck.

mypolicy.co.uk seem to be the lowest price I can find (& around 900 cheaper than the next lowest!) - anyone know of any other good ones to look at ?

thanks

    Hi,
I chose the co op young driver insurance about 2 years ago as it was the cheapest i could find to add my eldest son as a named driver. My other son turned 17 last year and i was able to add him onto my policy as a learner and the premium didn't go up when he passed his test.
The only downside is you have to have a tracker box fitted to your car. It does make you more aware of your driving style.
    I would definitely recommend them.

I also went with co-op. No other quote was anywhere near. You can get some refunds for "good behaviour" also. The second year was considerably cheaper (when my son was 19). The year he was 20 we went with LV and stopped the tracker. The rules for the tracker is based on averages so you can occasionally stay out late etc. We found it a good thing for a young driver to have some restrictions.

    Ha!

Thanks very much for the replies: we tried a quote, but due to the car having a replacement audio unit (nothing that flash, and not something we put in!), they would not quote!
Oh yes, and if we somehow replaced the nice Sony with an original system....the price was over £4,000 !!

    Bizarre.
    Any other recommendations?!

£3000 - £4000 seems to be the prices at present. Just jad to go through the process again.

Daughter recently passed. Cannot get her covered on my car. At present she wouldnt use the car all week and probably rarely at the weekend so not worth buying one. Not worth paying £3000 - £4000 anyway.

See how things change when her course finishes later this year. May need transport for work?

Other than doing all the comparison sites and the companies not on the comparison sites and then trying local brokers. The price will be whatever they quote.

I found LV (liverpool vic) via my unison membership the cheapest to add DD to my car when she passed her test last year. It was £800 - car is Ford Fiesta

  • I am 21 and passed my test 2 weeks ago.

I went with Ingenie, as its fully comp and cheap, plus all the bonus such as courtesy car. It is black box insurance but with no curfews. Black box also acts as a tracker incase the car is stolen.

LV. £827 for a year's insurance for me and my daughter. Toyota Yaris.

Depending on price, obviously, you might want to consider that the downside of sticking with your current insurance company is that when you come to renew, your young driver will still not have had their licence for twelve months...

What car are you attempting to insure?

I honestly cannot remember who we used, but when my son passed at 17 we bough him an old volvo estate, rather unusual car for a new driver but it was cheaper to insure than any small car we had looked at, it was still a four figure sum though and that was with me as a second named driver which did give us quite a significant discount. We paid it one go as that was cheaper, so I then allowed my son to refund us in monthly installments.
  • I recently insured my 18 yr old son via Bell/Admiral insurance. It was worth calling Admiral after looking at the comparison sites quotes. It showed considerable savings if the policy did not start for 30 days but after talking to them the quote was lower than the best comparison site with the policy starting immediately.
