Interview tomorrow- what to wear?

Hello,

I've got an interview tomorrow with the NHS for a support worker role, but I have no idea what to wear. I've ruled out a suit because I think that will be too formal, but I obviously still need to dress smartly. I need a little guidance as I'm totally clueless when it comes to clothes. I'm planning on buying a pair of smart black trousers and then probably these shoes (or something similar, if I can find some that are a bit less ugly): http://www.marksandspencer.com/footglove-original-wide-fit-bow-wedge-ballerina-shoes/p/p22245818?colour=Black

So my main problem is what kind of top to wear. I quite like this top but I don't know if its a bit too casual/busy for an interview? http://uk.monsoon.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/mon_1,mon_1.6/5330184651

Or would something like this be better? http://www.marksandspencer.com/mock-shirt-jumper/p/p22302285

Or am I way off the type of thing I should be wearing? Advice/opinions/suggestions would be most welcome!

TIA

A suit shows you are serious about the position, and have made an effort.

Vote number 3 for a suit. I hate the bloody things but you can get some nice off-the-peg ones for £200 or less.
  • Oh really? Well I'm glad I posted on here otherwise I would have gone underdressed! Is it at least acceptable to wear a jacket like this: http://www.marksandspencer.com/open-front-jacket/p/p22274363 and a top like the one the model is wearing with it rather than a proper suit jacket and shirt? (I live in causal clothes so theres something in me that is resisting wearing a full on suit if I can get away with it).

Personally, that would be fine from my point of view.

i've had drivers turn up for an interview in a suit and it always gives a good impression.

I think that jacket is nice too with a smart skirt.

I think the two tops you linked to are nice, but a bit too casual for an interview.

    good luck!

I always think you can never be overdressed for an interview (OH would say different as he's never been for a farming job in a suit).
If I think the role warrants something less formal I find a shift dress and jacket look great. That's about as casual as I would go though.
The Monsoon top is definitely way too casual for an interview.

You can only ever be under dressed. Suit or suit jacket at least. Never a casual look and never a cardigan as some people on here have wanted to wear

    Good luck

  • Don't worry, me to! I have a carer interview Monday and was really ready to ditch the suit for once! I'm going to now try softish dress and the usual black jacket me thinks! hopefully they will realise as I've been in care before and would know black trousers are order of the day along with wearing a tunic, only say that cause I went for a gym job recently and felt so out of place wearing a suit it just didn't feel right and as I felt very uncomfortable which displayed prob in the interview! (.. yeah perhaps it was my weight to so now ere to dress to be as confident as I can) xx
