Decorating quotes & advice please!

Hi, I need lots of decorating doing in my house but am on a tight budget. The rooms have been badly papered in the past so need properly decorating rather than my old way at my last home of just painting over!
Roughly how much is reasonable for my hall, stairs and landing? It is a traditional 30's built ex-council house if that helps. Would wallpaper or painting be cheaper?
Also would I get a better price overall if I asked for a quote at the same time for the 5 rooms that need doing or will I be paying the same total if I space the jobs out?
Lastly how do you find/choose a decorator? I like to go on recommendation usually (& price!) but don't know anyone locally who has used a decorator.
Please help!

Just to add, I am in Leicester. If anyone can recommend a reasonably priced decorator in the area (or is one!) then I would really appreciate a recommendation.0

I am in Leicester. I have already stripped my hall/stairs/landing and got a quote of £720 for 2 men for 3 days to prepare and paper plus £80 for materials from a reputable firm. If it took less time they would charge less. I would still need to do all the paintwork so I am planning on getting the ceilings skimmed and papering the walls myself. Wallpapering is fairly easy to do but I wouldn't practise on your stairwell.0
