Car insurance no claims bonus disclosure

I am renewing my car insurance and am confused because in dec 2012 and jan 2013 I made a claim on my car insurance because of damage I received to my car which totalled a value of 1,100 and 700 which my insurers paid for at the time I had and still have protected no claims bonus my question is do I have to disclose this to my new insurer and if so how do I do this whilst still retaining my no claims bonus

You need to declare the claims. The renewal letter from your current insurer will probably state how many years NCD you have, and this is is a separate piece of information that you need to tell any new insurer.

p.s. please Google 'punctuation' and try experimenting with it...

If you had two separate claims for which your Insurers could not recover their outlay then you probably do not have protected no claims bonus anymore (Depending which Insurer your with). With most companies you would have reverted to just maximum no claims bonus

the question that you need to ask

is protected no claims discount transferable?

It is a question that i do not know the answer to but if you pay company A to protect your NCD and then decide to leave them why would company B honour your protected NCD

my take is protected no claims discount is only any good if you stay with the same insurer year on year and dont chop and change for a better deal

when you fill in an insurance quote the question that you answer is have you had an accident in the last three years? and the answer to that would have to yes
  • No claims discount is transferable irrespective of if its been protected or not.

If the new insurer will allow you to protect the NCD when you bring it to them will depend on their own particular rules. For example most wont allow you to protect it if you've made one claim in each of the last two years (though in fairness, it would be pointless to protect it anyway given most rule that its only 2 claims in 3 years so a claim in year 3 would make you lose the NCD despite the protection)

Even if the NCD is protected and retained you do still have to declare all the incidents and claims as per the other questions
