Voice altering (helium/chipmunk style)

Hi all

Does anyone have any suggestions for ways in which it would be possible for me to alter someone's voice (I'm after a helium or chipmunk effect) when they are speaking live into a microphone which is connected to a sound deck (ie not via a computer, so there is not software I could install).

It's a bizarre request, part of an elaborate (sanctioned!) practical joke at an otherwise very serious conference. I've tried googling for suggestions, but can't find anything - do any of you great techie folk have any suggestions? I'd be very grateful for ideas on how I could make this happen - thank you!

Look on professional audio suppliers' websites and in store for an 'octave doubler', 'pitch shifter' or similar.

Unfortunately, most that I've found from a quick search have been intended for use with guitar inputs.

Ha - I have given serious thought to whether I could surreptitiously administer helium to the delegate before he speaks, but it's probably not a good idea :)

I have googled pitch shifter - thank you very much for the suggestion. Do you think this could somehow be connected to the microphone (which I assume has a similar jack plug to a guitar (?) maybe)?

You need to confirm this with however is supplying the sound system. The mikes are more likely to have XLR connections; or they might be radio mikes.
