Tax Credit Calculator

Anyone know why the tax credit calculator is so inaccurate? I entered all my details and got an estimate of what I may be entitled to for child tax credits and working tax credits, yet when I actually rang them up and went through the same details they gave me figures of between £400/£600 less then the calculator? Has anyone else noticed the same thing?

From what i understand the HMRC calculator is very unreliabe...you would be better inputting your details into the ...entitledto calcuator or the Turn2us calculator for a more accurate figure.
  • Thanks Poppie, pretty sad the HMRC calculator is so inaccurate as they are the ones who make the final decision! lol

The HMRC calculator can be confusing at it gives a figure that is due from 'today' until the end of the tax year. Some people read this incorrectly. If looking at it today it will show you the total due for the next 6 weeks which you would need to divide by the number of weeks to get the weekly figure

The HMRC calculator can also be way off mark, i tried it with a friend once and we are both aware of dividing the amount into the remaining weeks, it gave an extremly generous amount indeed, and was way of the mark. Someone at HMRC told her she will get a more accurate figure by using the entitledto calculator.

EDIT: I apologise to the OP and the HMRC workers on these boards if i am wrong was just basing my answer on the above experience and some past posts from other that said they had been given inaccurate figures and found the other calculators more accurate, i suppose it maybe be as CAZ as said people aren't dividing ...I suppose in the end there is no harm in trying all the calculators.
