List of Files in a Folder?

Options
Where can I get a list of what files should be in a Windows 8.1 folder, not what I have in that folder?

Comments

  • The question makes no sense, did you have a particular folder in mind?

Do you mean one of the system folders, rather than a folder that you've populated with your own data?

I'm not sure that there's an easy way. I've never had to check, anyway. What are you trying to do? What makes you think that system files might have been added or deleted?

If you really need to do this, the easiest way might be to install Windows 8 in a virtual machine so you can see what files exist in a clean installation. Be aware that the detected hardware in a virtual machine will differ from your actual hardware, so any driver-related files may be different on the VM.

if you think you and I have the same files, sorry because hardware, installed s/w and possible differences in os will occur.

if you think you will always have the same files or same number of files, again due to service packs, download and day to day working things will be different.

How different is the next question, some file will be new, other stay the same name. some may grow while others shrink. Many will stay the same, but think the last win7 update i did was about 700Meg of compressed files.

now to get a file listing get a cmd prompt as administrator
cd the the top directory of the location you want say cd \windows
now type below where e: is your usb drive letter
    attrib /s /d > e:\test.txt
or type in below as it should be the same
    dir /b /s /a /on > f:\test.txt

Now if you want to know which files are installed on your system, it will involve the above, then backing up your current system, then wipe everything, then install the new os, patch it to the current level, do the above attrib again but call it test2.txt this time, compare both files for differences and for this I would probably use notepad++ as it is not only very good but has a compare feature too

Not sure what you are typing to do, but probably would not do it this way
