Halifax Clarity Card

Yes, putting the account into credit is against the T&Cs. Not a good idea if she is intending using it for 18 months as they could send the funds back and close the account.
Even with 21.9% interest on cash withdrawals, that is only around £1.82 a month per £100. Most other card charge a fee of a few pounds and apply a loading of around 3% meaning that each £100 would cost £103 + the fee.0 -
I was thinking of pre-loading the card so that she does not incur any interest but someone stated this is not allowed as outlined in the T&C's. I will have to look or just ask them I guess.
It's on their FAQs page (scroll to the 'common enquiries' tab):Can I put money on my card to increase my available credit whilst on holiday?
Credit cards are not designed to be used this way. Using the card in this way breaches the product's Terms & Conditions, which state:
7.7 You must not make payments or transfer funds from another credit or store card to your account that would leave a credit balance on your account. We may return any funds that exceed the balance owing on your account to the account from which the money was sent.0 -
I can do it for her as Santander have this facility. I was thinking of pre-loading the card
If you can see her account and you have the facility to make payments to it, you could organise with her that you monitor the account and pay off ATM
transactions as soon as they show up on the account. Or get her to send you an email every time she makes an ATM withdrawal to prompt you to make the payment. Oh, and charge her top-whack for your efforts. . .0 -

Even if you pay the card off in full at the due date you will pay interest on cash withdrawals. This can be minimised by paying off any amount you withdraw as soon as possible. I recently spent over a month away and paid less than a pound in interest despite using the Clarity for all cash withdrawals and purchases (nearly £2k.) Note that cash withdrawals have to be from an ATM to be fee free.
I would also recommend that she takes other debit and credit cards with her, even if they are expensive to use. Expensive cash is better than no cash at all. Just relying on one card is really not a good idea.
Why don't you just open a N&P current account?0 -
The way to preload a card is to buy something, pay the bill then return it for a refund. Something could be a fully flexible airline ticket.
I find it strange that preloading is not OK in the UK. Cards in many other countries have no problem with it, which means that you can make a lot of money by doing 0% balance transfers without actually having a balance.0
