G_M and Phill99, really, there's no need to be rude. Your tone makes me suspect you are landlords. But thanks all for your input.
Phill99 - if I hired a lawnmower and broke the blade, but the hire agreement said that the hire company is responsible for repairing the blades, then I would not expect to have to pay for the blade.
.
No I'm not a landlord. I just tell it like it is. The truth often offends.
Why don't you have done with it and smash up the rest of the bathroom and see if you can get the landlord to pay to fix it.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -

We've had to move a few times recently so haven't gotten any contents insurance, but will think about it in case something like this happens again as we should be here a while. Who are you with and would you recommend them? Thanks!
We are with Endsleigh. The premiums were very reasonable (better than some insurance the letting agency tried to flog us!) To be honest they were a little bit slow in dealing with the claim but they didn't quibble and it was all sorted in a satisfactory way.
At the time we took out the insurance with them we had a vague impression that they were one of the few insurance companies suitable for tenants (as they do a lot of student insurance etc.) But I have since been told that tenant liability is a feature of a lot of contents insurance. Although I have not checked this out.0 -
Thanks Annabee, much appreciated.0

Thanks all for your advice - I have agreed to pay for it now.0

How magnanimous!!Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0

One of the reasons why it's this rather weird way round (landlord responsible for repairing it, but tenant responsible to pay the landlord for it) was explained to me this way:
If the tenant were responsible for replacing the sink, then they may install one which weren't acceptable to the landlord- and ultimately it's the landlord's property. With the landlord liable to repair it, but able to recoup the cost, the final sink/finish will be acceptable to the owner.
Of course, this does create the risk of betterment, but the tenant should be watching out for that...0 -
I don't really understand why people are repeating the same point.
Seriously, this thread needs no more posts saying "it's your fault!"...0 -
Landlord is of course responsible for repairs, not damage though. You break it, you fix it.
Tbh I have private rented for many years and would never dream of thinking the landlord should pay for anything I may damage.0
