Profiteering council run facility vent

Options
Every afternoon at 2 I go to my local leisure centre to swim.

It normally costs £2.80. (OAP price)

After 3 pm it costs £3.10.

Today at 2 pm it cost £3.10.

On enquiring why the price had increased I was informed, because the kids are on holiday because of an in service day at the local schools.

There were no notices anywhere about this price increase and when I I asked about this I was told, that is what we are charging.

And to top it all some little kid nicked my 50p for the locker when I dropped it.

They were doing you a favour. I don't go near the local pools when the kids aren't in school.

Being an OAP and haven't a clue when the school holidays are never mind in service days I didn't find out till I got to the place.

TBH I wouldn't call 30p profiteering, at those prices the pool is doubtless financially subsidised by the council!

I'm with the OP, frankly I find it ridiculous that a local council up the prices when the kids are on holiday/in service day, money is tight for a lot of folk and if there is more than 1 kid it can add up, in fact I believe the council should be encouraging kids to use the pool by cutting the price on school holiday not increasing them, apart from maybe getting bored kids off the street there is the health benefits

Why should the council be the odd man out? Everybody else hikes their price when the kids are off.

  • Why should the council subsidise the pool, when I have to maintain my own pushbike?

Your local authority will publish school holiday dates online, inservice training days are more difficult admittedly, but the noise levels are a good indication.
  • It might well be the case that due to the extra number of kids using the pool that the council were required to bring in extra attendants or lifeguards at short notice and the 30p extra per person was to cover the costs incurred.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that there is some sort of health and safety legislation that states how many staff must be on duty in relation to the number of people using the pool, and if the school's "in service day" wasn't planned for in advance, the council may not have had adequate staff on site.
  • Our Council does free swimming for kids in the holidays.

They need the extra money for the extra pool filtering they will have to do to get all the kiddy wee out of the water and the extra cleaning of the changing rooms where the little darlings are to spoilt to clean up after themselves.

Your local council run pool will publish term time and school holiday timetables on their website and available at the pool.
