How can I give him some cash?

I think all you can do is explain why you've saved this only and tell him what you would want him to do with it and leave him to it. If you feel you can't do that then probably best keep holding it form him until you think he will.
I received a similar sum at 21 from my parents on leaving university, probably more and it's now 25 years ago so would have been worth far more.
I went off round the us with it for a couple of months, with additional savings of my own. My parents may not have been that chuffed bit didn't create a big issue and ultimately people are either sensible and rational, learn to become so or continue to be reckless. It's always surprised me how little people seem to change as they age though at 18 there's lots of time to.0 -
We gave our children a sum of money, a couple of years ago.We had an insurance policy mature. The two eldest were at uni. The youngest still at home. One went travelling, one bought a new laptop and one bought a load of clothes.
I felt I wanted to give them the money but had to accept by giving it to them I may not like or agree with what they chose to do with it.
If you feel it would upset you or cause friction if your son was to fritter the money away you could hang onto it until something comes along that means he will need it. Such as a car, house deposit, holiday of a lifetime.0 -
I have opened many accounts online over the years both for my son and DH. I then transfer money electronically from another account into it. Admittedly, I shouldn't do it (legally/morally - no lectures please), and I do it with their permission (too lazy to do it themselves!). I've never had any problems.0

Both ours were given savings at 21 from their nan who had been putting money away since they were born and they both blew it.
May have only been 1200 but it was loads to her and she was heartbroken that they didn't do something sensible with it.
That's really sad. Goodness knows how many sacrifices she made to put away that money for them over the years.
