Used car with no V5 Dealer claims it is lost any help appreciated

Just bought a car from a dealer who assured us that they had all documents when we turned up to collect the car we were given an MOT cert and a 6 month tax disc and a V62 cert with a receipt for £25 paid to post office. Dealer said that this was quite normal and all we had to do was to post the form and the receipt to DVLA to get new log book in our name. They claimed to have lost the paperwork. We had done HPI check on all info available and it all seemed OK We have receipt for the car insurance and tax but are now just a bit worried about whether that is enough to prove that we own it have sent the V62 to DVLA but understand that this could take up to 6 weeks may be over reacting here but thinking we have been stitched up by the dealer

  • well if they have paid for theV62 fee then no problem but a call to dvla wont hurt if log book hasnt turned up in 6-8 weeks

Big dealer or small one? If its a company that change names more often than they change underwear then avoid.

If they have been trading for a while or a bigger outfit then i wouldnt be bothered.

Its taxed so no issues there.

I would echo other comments. No need to worry.

I bought a car from main Audi dealer, They sent V5 to DVLA and somehow managed to get my address wrong. After six weeks no V5 and dealer were not much help. I eventually got log book changed to my name and no worries - except V5 now shows two previous owners instead of one.

  • We had something similar, bought an ex-demonstrator car for our son's 21st.

Complete !!!! up all round, told sales guy why we were buying and who for so car ordered in my wife's name and I happened to go in and pay for it. Son couldn't go in as it was a complete surprise.

So V5 rolls up in wife's name and gap insurance in mine!

Took both lots back to dealer and told them to sort it which they did.

Now V5 says 1 previous owner.

The v5 doesn't prove ownership anyway. I'm the registered keeper on my wife's car but she owns it. I think it says somewhere on the v5 that the registered keeper is not necessarily the owner. All you need to prove ownership is a purchase receipt from the dealer.

^^^Exactly this. The V5 only shows who is the registered keeper, not the owner of the vehicle.
