EDF And Electric bill

Hi Folks, need some help. i have had long conversation with EDF this morning over my bill.

my bill is now around £2500 as of today with the meter reading i gave today my previous bill in december was £1600 ( this was from feb to decemeber after they adjusted my bill as they said i gave incorrect reading.

My usage according to the last bill was 14,708 kwh daytime, and 2,285 kwh night time

i live in a 2 bed flat all electric, for heating and cooking, have 2 flat screens (one use 132 Watts in on mode one is 118 watts) 3 consoles hardley used, 1 pc, 4 oiled filled radiators, the usual washing machine, fridge, freezer, etc. so nothing major that would chug electric.

the agent at edf said i have use around 3000 units of electric since my last reading 2nd decemeber. i have been paying £175 a month and now they are saying i need to pay £260 a month just to cover my usage.

they reckon im using about 1600 units a month which "does seem very high" and if they took off the payments made my bill would be around £3800 for the year.

so im asking the expert for some advice on what to do, am going to turn everything off and go out for an hour take a meter reading when i leave and one when i get back to see if it has moved at all which im hoping it has then i know there is an issue, but if it hasn't then im at a loss as what to do next, have arranged to have a prepayment meter fitted as i can't afford such a huge dd a month (+ plus they would require at least a 20% despiot down before they set it up)

so thanking everyone in advance

Thats a lot are you on E7 and using it, instead of using those oil filled rads. I am on E7 and use about £110 month in winter.

  • Yes im on E7 have night storage heaters but found as my flat doesnt hold the heat very well, it was built in the 70's and the windows and gaps in the doors and window frame let alot of heat out, so switch to the oil filled heaters as we where told they where engery effienct

    Rubbish!

You are paying ~300% more to run those oil heaters instead of the night store heaters.

If you are not going to use night store, you need to stop using E7 and switch to a flat rate tariff.

Best advice: fix the leaks, insulate as much as possible and use the night store heaters as they were intended.

The tipping point for where a Standard meter becomes a better option than a E7 meter on EDF Energy’s standard tariff is ~80-85% of total usage on the day rate. You are using 87% so it should be cheaper to go onto a standard meter.

To find out you need to do a quote based on the consumption you have provided using EC7 as the meter – total consumption 17065 split 87% on the day. Take the current bill value it gives you. Exit the quote and do another quote based on the same consumption but on a standard meter (ignoring the day night split). Then look at the bill value of the products you get offered and see if its less than the bill value from the first step.

Give at a few months and RMR rules state suppliers should do this check for you automatically.

If you decide to go onto a standard meter you should request a totaliser tariff. This is a pseudo standard meter, it means you can keep your EC7 meter but have both day and night registers billed at the standard meter rate. This means it is simple to change back to EC7 if you want and you won’t need to have your meter exchanged. Not all EC7 meters are suitable for totaliser tariffs though, depends on your SSC/TPR, but your supplier should check that.
  • The answer here is already provided, get using those storage heaters. Oil filled rads cost a fortune as its using the most expensive fuel available grid electricity. Using off peak will save you around 2/3rds the cost.
