Insurance Company want NI number??

This is a proper claim and not an ambulance chasing issue
My wife and i were passengers in a taxi and was hit by another car, now the solicitors that are dealing with the case have sent a case handler to our house and they wanted personal details like a copy of a driving licence and a proof of a utility bill which they say was so they could confirm we were the people in the accident, but then i noticed on the form they wanted my National Insurance number, when i asked why they said it was policy so again i asked for what reason and they said it was company policy and nobody else had ever questioned this before, does this sound a reasonable request or should i not give them my NI number.

If they are using an electronic ID verification system then NI is one of the ways of helping the system pass the checks.
