Hi,
Am hoping to get some advice. We want to get a portable credit card machine for our small electrical business, but unsure which to go for. Can anyone recommend one? We don't want to shell out monthly fees, or a high percentage of each transaction either. but we also want the customer to feel safe and secure using the machine, so is it best to go with a well known brand?
thanks
Tamsin

You get nowt for nowt, not in this world.

It costs money & service to make a machine - they don't grow on trees.

Monthly fees are usually the best solution for most retailers ... or you will have to pay high transaction charges.
  • thanks!
Yes realize we will have to pay, just wondering what the best terminal and options are really.

If you have a smart phone or tablet I recommend iZettle. The reader is just £99 and you pay 2.75% per transaction (Although the more you process the rate goes down). There is also a promotion on right now so the first £2000 of transactions is free. The device is also the only one on the market that accepts pretty much all cards, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club, JCB etc.
  • I use payatrader, they are fantastic. Mobile card machine with sim £3 per week rental or purchase outright for £99 and £1.50 per for the week. no other monthly fees, just 2.75% on all transactions.
check them out, you also get a virtual Terminal also.

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • it depends on your average transaction size, number of transactions per month and total monthly income from cards as to what deal you should get.

    https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/credit-card-reader

Paypal here is 2.75% per transactions and you can buy a chip n pin reader for £99 or customers can pay witht the paypal app on their phone - don't evern need the chip and pin

that makes sense if you have a low number of transactions. or you can goto barclays for examples and pay them £50pm and maybe only pay 1%+20p per transaction.

so depends if you are selling cookies at 50p each or cars at £10000 each :)
  • I use WorldPay Zinc and very happy - for low volume medium value transactions on the move. I looked at iZettle but for a few reasons didn't pursue it. I certainly do not have 100% confidence in PayPal as an organisation so would not consider their system.
  • I've heard of Global Payments. Those guys issue card readers to small businesses. Not sure how much they cost, ect. But might be worth Googling.

    Oh, and they're UK based.

    I've tried Zincpay and iZettle.

I found Zincpay cheaper in terms of fees, but struggled to accept Amex which was a major hurdle for me given the line of trade I'm in.

iZettle works with Amex although their merchant fees are about 0.5% higher than I was paying with Zincpay.
Never argue with an idiot. Especially not this idiot because I'm always right anyway.
  • I am a small business and i struggle with worldpay zinc.

I always have to unpair and re-pair, log back in, re configure before every transaction and now the printer they recommended online still isnt printing out the receipts. theyre currently investigatiing, i have to say, their 247 service is faultless, super friendly and helpful staff but its no good when the product itself isnt amazing for us.

We are looking into Paypal, anyone have anything to say about the paypal card reader. Anyone have a discount code for one (UK)

    Thanks!
