Collecting keys on completion day????

I know this is probably going to sound like a bit of a stupid question, but its the first time I've done this, so apologies in advance.

We complete on our first house tomorrow, and I'm a bit confused as to how we get the keys once it's been confirmed all the money, etc has been exchanged correctly. All the advice I've read or seen has said that normally the keys would be left at the estate agents, but the sellers have used an on-line estate agency who doesn't have a local office. I've asked them and our solicitors what will happen, and both have been a bit wishy washy.... Has anyone had any experience with this, or have any thoughts on what you think would happen.

Thanks in advance

  • Perhaps the sellers will just hand them to you themselves?

When I moved our buyer was standing in our kitchen waiting for me to clear the last of our stuff out.

There's always "under a brick in the front garden."

That's where our main set was left, because there was no way we wanted to meet the greasy agent.....ever! :rotfl:

The EA we sold through, and the one we bought through, both said that the keys were meant to come into their offices.

On completion day, we asked our solicitor if our buyers could come round at 11:30am (when we'd have finished moving out). She called their solicitor, who called them. Buyers came round at 11:30 and we just handed the keys over.

Our solicitor then spoke to the solicitor of the people we were buying from and found out when keys would be released. We went round and waited outside, then took the keys off the sellers.

Saved trips all over town to EA offices. :D

Last time I bought I had to collect the keys from the EA.

When your solicitor confirms completion, they'll tell you what to do. If you want you can phone your solicitor first thing and say you'd like to go and get the keys direct from the seller when they're leaving, and ask your solicitor to arrange a time for this (if the sellers don't mind doing it).

We were meant to collect the keys from the estate agent but the sellers were slow in packing up their stuff so I ended up going round to watch them load up the van, and then they gave the keys straight to us.
