you can cut up the card but you can't cancel the account until it is settled. just cut it up, tell them you have done so, and clear off the debt as soon as you can. once at Zero, tell them to close the account.
fwiw, nowadays i use Barclaycard as my second choice spending card. and have found their CS to have improved. i have a Barclaycard Cashback for spending and a Barclaycard Rewards with a BT balance on.0
