My wife was recently left 500 shares in the Amalgamated Metal Corporation Plc, we cannot find share prices for them and they don't respond to our emails. I wonder if anyone out there can shed some light on them.

It looks a bit complex but from what I can find out (mostly from this report from 2009)...
Various individuals hold shares in AMCO Investments Ltd, with just 4 people owning a controlling 52% stake.
That in turn owns 88% of Amalgamated Metal Corp PLC
Which in turn owns 4 other companies.
The first thing to check is at which level you hold shares.
Assuming it is Amalgamated Metal Corp PLC, are they ordinary shares or preference shares? The company has issued both according to their 2012 accounts.
Either way you should be receiving dividends. Fixed amounts if you have preference shares and variable amounts if you have ordinary shares. In 2012 they paid out 192p per share on the ordinary shares, so if you have 500 that was £960.
That's the good news. The bad news is the company appears to be private so you can't sell the shares on the open market. You can only sell if you find somebody yourself who wants to buy them. As such there is no publicly quoted price so you can't say what they are worth.0 -
Ah, I missed the buyout and had assumed they owned private shares. In that case scrap what I said above!0

6% CP - 68.5p per share approx
5.4% CP - 62.5p per share approx.
Ord's don't exist any more as per the above info. If you were due the cash (£1,825) you would have been moved onto a dissenters register for reclamation. You usually have 12 years from take over to contact the relevant people and prove you are a shareholder; in this case the certificate and a copy of the will/probate to show entitlement. Takeover was 21/11/03 so you have about 21 months left.
Current registrars from the Cumulative Prefs are Share Registrars - 01252 821 390. Very good company (unlike the likes of Equiniti or Capita) and should be able to provide the information you need.0
