Statute Barred Debt in Scotland

About 6.5 years ago I was self employed. I put about 11-12 customers to a local shed builder (the customers were all dealing with him direct). One of these customers didn't pay, which I knew about but it was nothing to do with me as I had only given a recommendation.
Last week I received a demand from a debt collecting agency called Commercial & Domestic Investigations demanding nearly £1000.00!!
A friend told me in Scotland because I had no knowledge of any debt in my name, did not admit to any debt in my name, made no payments to any debt & it was more than 5 years old that the debt was now Statute Barred, was now extinct & I legally didn't have to discuss it if I didn't want to. He also said I could get make complaints to Police Scotland & my Local Trading Standards Office about harassment once I'd received 3 demands.
Is that true? Its like a minefield trying to to find out. I'm 37years old & getting a heart operation next week so this is the last thing I need right now.

Just write to them stating you have no idea who they are and have not debts.
Ask them to provide more information on how/why they think you owe them money.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
You might find this thread useful Statute barred debts and the Limitation Acts
I would send them either the prove it letter - Letter when you know nothing about about the debt - AKA "Prove it" letter
or a hybrid letter saying you have no knowledge of any debt but even if it did exist it would be statute barred. There is a template for this for England on post #5 of that first link but you'd need to change the legislation references to those in post #3 for Scotland.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0
