Food for elderly cats with sensitive tummies

My old boy turned 19 this month, until summer last year was very sprightly but now his age seems to be catching up with him. He had a problem with mobility last month which seemed to be linked to constipation and now treating that with a daily dose of katalax. Now I'm wondering after reading about slow motility through the digestion system if his food is upsetting his tummy and wondered if there were any recommendations for alternatives.
Normally my boy has a good appetite, averaging around 3 satchets of Sheba daily with occasional top ups of tuna fish (easy to get drugs crushed up tablets into him) however every 3 or 4 days he goes off his food and vomits occasionally. Today he's seemed hungry and initially started the day off well, but this afternoon was vomiting clear bile. Tonight he's turned his noise up at his dinner but tried pinching fish we had from the fish shop for dinner. He's had a few sneaky titbits of fish as a result and although looking for his food tonight, sniffs it and walks away. I'm beginning to wonder if the food us too rich for his already sensitive digestion system and if there is a better alternative for him?

Hi miss J, that sounds like vet visit behaviour to me as he's vomiting and has suddenly gone off of his normal food whilst still being hungry - I would be wondering why his normal food is making him nauseous all of a sudden, but if you do think it's too rich you could try some I/d by the hills, it's made for sensitive tummies. I normally advocate raw feeding as that proved to be the best thing for all of my cats, including one with IBS, but that is likely to exacerbate the constipation.
Perhaps just try switching brand?0 -
yes I think he needs a vet visit too.....did the vet check the constipation and advise Katalax daily?
I think you need to be sure there is no blockage in his gut, and then use a more specific laxative it that is what is needed. If it is just nausea from acid stomach then vet may be able to prescribe an anti-acid such as Famotidine.0
