Fencing

What is called when you fit the type of fencing where you bang single strips of featheredge against the arris rails rather than using fencing panels?

Should the arris rails be on my neighbour's side of my side as the nicer side is the side without the arris rails.

Could someone please point out the best and strongest type of fencing to put up against the elements and for minimal maintenance?

Thanks.

it could be called a close boarded fence or a feather edge fence

the face of the fence should be on the outside of the fence and the posts and rails on your side

Stupid question but surely the nicer looking side of the fence is the side which does not have the rails? Why put this side facing you, let the neighbour have the ugly side?

Also how would I tell the quality of the fence and is it better to go for smaller width feather edging or larger?

you are correct in what you say that the close board side of the fence looks nicer so why not have that side facing your garden

that is all well and good but if your fence borders any open areas or there is easy access into your neighbours garden then it is a security issue because the arris rails can be used to climb over the fence

whey put up a six foot fence which will provide privacy and security and then provide a way of climbing over it

I dont think there is any law that says face side out but it is normally a courtesy thing

Weve just gone through the decision of what new fence - due to the exposed nature we went for hit and miss - the posts are on our side, the rails and then boarded either side leaving a board width gap between eash upright. We opted for vertical to avoid providing a ladder for nosy people

just Google hit and miss fence panels and you will see what he was on about

what he meant was if you fit hit and miss boards horizontaly then you could use the fence boards as a means to climb the fence

We have a feather edge fence on the left side of our back garden - the attractive face is (obviously) facing our side. Our right hand neighbour also has the same type of fence and he also has the attractive side facing into his garden.

Not quite sure why you'd pay for a fence and not do it this way...

    Force ten,

When you say courtesy thing - do you mean courtesy for the neighbour to have the good looking side ?

When I google hit and miss boards it shows a different style fencing. Am I right in thinking that the only difference between this style and featheredge/close boarded fencing is that there are no gaps?
