I've got a Peugeot 307 diesel, I do about 500 miles per week. I'm averaging 52 mpg, mixture of town, motorway and open country roads ( where I must admit I don't exactly drive economically - I think "spirited" is the word ! ). Never had a problem with it in the 3 years I've had it, bought it at 5 years old. Only thing I've ever done is service it myself, regular oil & filter changes, I can't fault it.
The Nissan Micra and Fiat Panda always seem to get good press - not sure how comfortable they'd be for long motorway munching though.
The Pug 307 is a great car.
The 2.0HDI is the one to have.
Avoid the 1.6HDI, its a horrible engine.0 -
Get a 8-9 year old 1.25 Fiesta for a grand or less and enjoy cheapo motoring for a couple of years, throw it away and start again.
Hard not to get 50mpg on motorway runs, drives like a bigger car (engine is very different from the 1.1 & 1.3, but don't waste your extra on the 1.4).
Everything is cheap and available to fix it and you can fit a washing machine in the back with the seat folded down.0 -

I had a 1.25 Zetec back in 2007. Quite sore on fuel. Also a little underpowered. You could feel the difference to the power when you put the air con on, which is never a good sign.
Honest John reporting 39mpg on average, which is better than i was getting but not great.
Too small an engine for motorway cruising though.
Otherwise a good car and as you described. My son ran one for a while too - it gave no trouble at all.0 -
Looking for a cheap to run and insure small car 3 door for around 2k to 3k that will happily chug along and chew up many miles.
Criteria :
Good on a motorway cruising for hours.
Really good on fuel at least 50 mpg at a minimum.
Cheap insurance + tax.
Reliable.
Cheap parts and easy to service.
Suggestions ?

as with all cars do your research first then look at them later with knowledge for what to look out for.
Not exactly a small 3 door car is it?0 -
