Tax refund at end of JSA claim?

    Thanks Chris I think I understand. I don't mean to hijack this thread but I have a hypothetical question. Say someone loses their job in October like the OP has, claims CB JSA , but instead of starting a new job say February they then claim CB ESA. It's all in the same tax year and expect to still be on contribution based ESA going into the new tax year, will the ESA pay the tax refund sometime after 5th April even though they still have a live claim? Thank you.

    If you have a look at that link I posted the details are in there.
    If you're getting Incapacity Benefit or Employment and Support Allowance, you'll get any refund you're entitled to after the end of the tax year or after you've stopped claiming.

    What I meant to say was if their CB ESA claim changes to IR ESA in the new tax year, the claim for ESA is live, will the ESA pay the tax refund after the end of the tax year as the claim for ESA will be for an indefinite period?

    Tax always self adjusts over the year if earnings vary from one month to another or you start part way through the year. The employer pays a tax rebate in the same way they deduct tax. As long as you have a tax code that is not week 1/month 1 or are on a BR tax code.

    So as long as the income for the year to date is below the threshold on your tax code you should get a refund through your employer. If you have already earn't over the threshold in your previous job you may not be due a tax refund.

    Sorry one other point OP if the P45 the job centre have given you only shows the benefit they have paid you and does not include the previous income from the other job. It could result in an refund of tax that was not due from the new employer.

    The P45 you have should really be on a month 1 basis (emergency basis) if they haven't included your income from the previous job as the previous poster explained.

    No idea what would happen under these circumstances, could well be a payment when jobseekers ends and a new P45 issued or might just transfer to ESA. Should be a payment after April 5 either for all tax rebate due or if a rebate was made when jobseekers finished then for the time between it finishing and the tax year end; but would not surprise me if by then the full details had not been lost and ended up having to claim from HMRC. Always assuming that a tax rebate was due.
