Is there anyone from Cippenham, Slough on here? (sewage smell related!)

I have a friend who is interested in buying in Burnham (which is where I live) but has now also began looking into Cippenham. I'm no expert as I don't really go past the CO-OP on Elmschott lane but even this far in from the M4 there is an occasional sewage smell (as is on Bath Road around here as I often go to the retail park with Mothercare).
Now he thinks that not all of Cippenham is affected by the sewage smell so he can get a house in Cippenham much cheaper than in Burnham (as in 2 bed in Burnham vs 3 bed detached in Cippenham). But if it comes as far in as Bath Road then I would have thought the entire Cippenham area does have the sewage smell issue.
Does anyone here have experience of this area and is able to clarify?

Surely it depends which way the wind is blowing?0

It's been 10 years since I lived there but never noticed the sewage smell in Cippenham, it was always worst near the gym near burnham station.0

I don't know where the gym near the station is (unless you mean the Haymill one on Burnham Lane) but I would have to get that far in the smell would have travelled through Cippenham itself?
If you don't mind me asking, whereabouts did you live in Cippenham? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Ah, fond memories of working on Slough trading estate back in the early '90s... If the wind was blowing the other way, you could damn near tell what was being made that day at the Mars factory.
Given that Cippenham is just the other side of the M4 to the sewage works, I'd be gobsmacked if it wasn't ever-present.0 -
The closer you get to the sewage works, the worse the smell - on some days although oddly Asda tends to be fine, but I suspect thats due to the trees and bank works around it.
The newer houses on the Eton Fields I couldn't recommend due to the smell. Also avoid the half of the Cedar Park estate past the shops on Earls Lane as they can smell a bit and you can hear the motorway there to in most homes. I live more towards the Westgate school area which is normally AOK for the smell (you occasionally catch it on the wind early morning) and you do not hear the motorway.
Saying that, since the heavy rain and floods, the smell has been noticeable around here too but it really has only been like that since the flooding so I assume that is solely to blame.
All in all, it has never been a problem for me nor my Mum who lives in the top half of the Earls Lane area and we have both lived here for almost 4 years now. I've never noticed it by the Mothercare shopping centre nor Burnham train station area.
Depending on which parts of Burnham he is looking at, I would pick Burnham though. Nicer shops and more of a village feel. Unless he is looking at Haymill/Priory side of Burnham in which case I would take Cippenham.0 -

They've closed and demolished one of the factories - the last bits of the old 1920s Citroen factory, once the biggest single-roof factory in the world - since then, and quite probably massively refitted the other.0 -

Oh did not realise that. I just assumed the one there was the one that did the production. The closer you get to the sewage works, the worse the smell - on some days although oddly Asda tends to be fine, but I suspect thats due to the trees and bank works around it.

Thanks for that!
I just looked up your area and I think where he is looking is further in from the M4 so should be fine. Well I genuinely did not know Cippenham was not entirely impacted.
I also had a look and Burnham station is actually in Cippenham although I drive past it everyday and have never experienced any smell around there. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I too plan to buy a house in Cippenham but reading this has really made me change my plans. The place I am looking at is close to the westgate school. Hows the situation there?0
