Nationwide FlexDirect - how long to open account?

I tried opening a Nationwide FlexDirect account online on 13/02/14. I can't remember if it said I'd been approved or whether further checks were needed (probably the latter) but I haven't heard a thing since then - no e-mail , no text, no letter and it's been 6 days. Can anyone who opened an account with them recently tell me if this is normal please.

  • I have opened a few new accounts recently and Nationwide was by far the slowest to get set up. The card and PIN came fairly quickly but the letters etc arrived a good week or after the date that was on them. I think they say you should receive everything within 2 weeks.
  • I did an online application early February, heard nothing for just over a week so called them only to be told that my application was incomplete despite having gone through the whole process and being told that I would hear in the next five days, they went through the same questions that I had already answered online, approved my application, offered me a credit card and sent out the paperwork.

I've now returned the signed application paperwork and am waiting for the account to be made live.

In short, give them a call to make sure the application was actually processed.

Where mine was opened within 2 days and showed on online banking, then again I'm already an existing customer, so there was no need for me to sign anything.

  • Found nationwide quick with setting up accounts. As above though was existing customer.
    Mortgage remaining: £42,260 of £77,000 (2.59% til 03/18 - 2.09% til 03/23)

    Savings target June 18 - £22,281.99 / £25,000
  • Thanks for your replies. I'll get in touch and see what they say.

When I applied I heard nothing for what seemed like ages, on calling them they couldn't find the application even though I had an account switching number. Then one day, the debit cards and PIN numbers etc just turned up.

Has been fine once opened but was very slow and the call centre next to useless regarding my opening. Have been fine since though.
  • PIN number arrived today, 6 days after returning the signed paperwork, hopefully the rest of the paperwork and card arrive soon.

You'll probably find the card will arrive tomorrow, as my pin arrived first then the day after card arrived then the day after my cheque book arrived.

Am glad to have discovered this thread - having a similar experience to the OP. Did an online application via my online banking on 11/02 and also not heard a thing. Will give them til Weds so that it has been 2 weeks and then give them a call.
