Trying to find out who owns strip of land next to house

Hi all,
I am hoping someone can come along with some advice for me...
Basically there is a strip of land next to our house that we are interested in buying and so need to find out who owns it.
I have had tried the council, but been told they do not own it and been referred to Land registry.
However when I look on the land registry site I can only search by address, and as it is a bit of land it doesn't have an address aarrgghh! - would I be best calling them?
Or is there anyone that I have missed that I may be able to call about the land (I have been told we have no Parish Council so no go there).
Thanks to anyone with any ideas!
