Boundary Fences, Use of Word "Mesne"

Hi, hopefully someone can help me before I start racking up a solicitors bill !!
We are hoping to build an extension to our property over the drive, with it extending up to the property boundary which is a fence between ours and our neighbors drives.
However, the fence between us and our neighbor does not seem "in the middle" when compared to the other properties in the street (all were built in 1933/34).
On checking our deeds, the following phrase is used "the walls and/or fences separating the premises hereby conveyed from the adjoining premises No 5 %%$$££ Avenue aforesaid being hereby declared the be MESNE and party walls and maintainable and repairable as such the walls and/or fences on the Northerly side (our neighbor at No 9, we live at No 7) of the premises hereby conveyed being heretofore declared to be MESNE and party walls and/or fences".
What is Mesne as far as boundary law? Do we have any rights over the fence (it is in place by approx 10 inches on our side assuming that the boundary is in the middle between our gable walls).
Anybody got any idea's?
Thanks
