BG to charge line rental for your gas/electricity

Thought that would get your attention,

I'm not sure if its been dicussed before but I have no idea why BT charge line rental so its a sobering thought if/when these utility companies start to charge you pipe rental for our pipes into house and electrical cable rental for electricity.

I have no idea why we also accept we have to pay BT line rental to maintain a line when these other companies don't charge to maintain pipes/electrical cables into house? or do they.

food for thought, cheers.

I am surprised I am the first to let you in to the awful secret that you already do pay for the distribution of your gas/lecci in your prices aprox 17% of your bill.

Then again this should be good news it's already included :)

Of course BT charge line rental because they have had to run a pair of wires all the way from your home to the exchange. A considerable feat ! They also have to maintain it along with lots of other pairs and power it up with new fangled 'lectric.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Many of the costs of getting utilities or communications to you are the same regardless of how much you use - (pipes & cables don't wear out any faster if you are a high user!) so it's not surprising that companies try to create a price structure which matches their cost structure.

That is quite reasonable, but it can be unpopular.

However, people are [STRIKE]stupid[/STRIKE] easy to fool. Until recently, most utility companies offered "NO STANDING CHARGE" tariffs, but charged a higher rate per unit for the first xxxx units per quarter, which usually meant that fixed costs were recovered anyway, but people THOUGHT they weren't paying a fixed charge.

Anyway, ofgem decided that these multi rate tariffs were too confusing for the [STRIKE]stupid [/STRIKE]public and banned them, resulting in nearly every utility company deciding that every tariff will now have a standing charge.

If you don't want to pay for the fixed costs of running a distribution network and running cables and pipes to your house, just buy a generator, jerry cans of petrol, and some bottled gas, then you can rest assured that all of your costs (after buying the generator) are truly variable.
