Where to start...if at all?

Hi

I emigrated from the UK 2 years ago and all this PPI mis-selling has somewhat passed me by...I did hear about it but knew that I had turned down the insurance on the only bank loan I had so I didn't pay much attention after that. However, I have only just realised that I might have had PPI on credit cards, car loans, mortgages, store cards etc...the only trouble is that because I emigrated and needed to decrease the amount of stuff I brought with me I have very little of the paperwork left... :( I am going to ask my parents to check the paperwork I did leave behind but I'm not particularly hopeful as I do remember having a rather lengthy shredding session...if I don't find any paperwork, all I really know for sure is which companies I had the agreements with, no dates, no account numbers, no nothing...

So, I have some questions:
- Is there any way of easily finding out account numbers/dates from any of the companies I had agreements with? I would rather not have to pay for hefty international phone bills as I'm not even sure if I'm entitled to anything...letter writing is an option using my parents' UK address though.
- In my case, do you think it would be worth using one of these no win no fee companies? Could they do the legwork for me or would they at least need the account numbers?
- What is the significance of 2005? If some of my agreements were before this (and I suspect most of them were), is there no point trying to claim? Without any account information, I would only have very approximate dates of any agreements.

Thanks in advance for any help! :)

1 - chekc your credit report for free - equifax/noddle/experian
2 - no, because there are no no win no fee companies. They all want roughly 40% of the gross
3 - If the company involved were members of a forerunner of the FSA they will be regulated, if they weren't, then they won't be - this includes things like car finance, catalogues, store cards, dial-a-loan etc

  • Hi
You can do this yourself. If you ring or write to the credit card, loan, etc they will tell you if you have ppi on any of them. I had cards that I did not know the numbers and the cc found the accounts. It is very easy to do as they will then send a letter and form.
Be aware that if you owe a balance and are successful the amount awarded will be taken of balance, also if you have settled and ONLY partial settlement they will take it off that balance even if they have not contacted you for remainder.
    Good luck
