    When you take out a policy, whether by phone, online or post the company must tell you if it will auto renew.

    They will then tell you again in the renewal letter if it will auto renew.

    So if you are on an auto renewal it is up to you to tell them before the renewal date to lapse the policy if you don't want it.

    Although I do think this is your mistake, you can pursue this for a refund as you have been dual insuranced. You may have to provide proof of this to the insurer.
