Cheapest tempory internet

Options
Hi folks,

Just moved in to a new house and I'm going to be without internet for about 6 weeks until Openreach can fit a new line.

At the moment I'm teathering my phone (I'm with TalkMobile) but I only have 500mb of allowance to use each month and I've already used 350mb of it.

What's the cheapest way for me to get 3G internet?

I have a Three dongle, and a unlocked phone that I can teather my PC with.

Many thanks guys.

All my love.

One option is a Samba mobile SIM to use with the 3 dongle

You have to watch adverts to gain credit a few megabytes at a time (the data used while watching ads is free or refunded), but the only money cost is the £5 paid on order of the SIM

If that doesn't appeal, look for 3 prepaid data SIMs on eBay or Amazon, 1 GB for a month or 3 GB for up to 3 months

I think I've seen people mention EE 6GB prepaid SIMs for 4g, which can of course be used at 3g

You can also cut your usage quite a bit in the settings of some browsers, for example Opera's so called turbo or off road mode, which uses compression at their server

If your 3 dongle is unlocked or you unlock it then

    http://www.ovivomobile.com/offer/ovivo-for-data/

This is on the Vodafone network so you need to check coverage in your area.
  • Morning guys, thanks for the responses.

I think I'm going to look at getting a 3 Pre-paid SIM - 3Gb for 3 months would be perfect so I'll look in to that.

Also, unlocking is not a problem for the dongle as I can teather with a old Android phone which is unlocked.

I'll look about and let you guys know.

    Cheers again

Seems expensive as against the Ovivo offer, when you run out of the three thats it - if you wanted at any other time to use it you would have to pay another £20 odd pound.

The Ovivo data offer gives you 1GB per month and does not expire, eg say you used 750mb in the month then at the next and every month it resets to 1gb, and so on, so you could have 12gb total each year and continuing for just the £20 outlay.

    Good Moneysaving.

I have no connection with Ovivo other than I use their Freedom 0 sim, and it does what it says on the packet.

Get a couple of tmobile sims, there are loads on ebay costing £1 with £5 free credit (just need to unlock your dongle which is straightforward).

Type in MONTHWEB in a text and send to 441, you'll get a months free internet. Limit is supposed to be 1gb before they slow you down (not boot you off), but I've used 4gb+ in a month and wasn't limited. At the end of the month, chuck the sim and put the other one in. 2 months internet for £1.98. Their speeds are quite good for me, 5-6mbps - a hell of a lot better than ovivo which I also use on my phone, most of the time I'm on edge speeds, unless I'm standing near a transmitter where I might get 1mbps.

I imagine you must've streamed or webcammed to use 4GB in a month! Is that, or even tethering allowed or is it hit or miss as to whether they notice?

This code doesn't seem to work for dongles - only mobile phones?.

Did you try putting the sim in your phone first, then texting code, waiting for the activation SMS and then putting it in your dongle?
  • Yes - got reply that transaction could not be carried out.
