Denhams Store card

I'll keep it brief, around 5 years ago, my wife took out one of these cards in store. On the first statement she noticed the PPI. She phoned to ask what it was and was told.
She hadnt the first idea she had signed up for it and told them to refund her and cancel it, they refused saying she would have been told all about it therefore she must pay. Total rubbish of course she hadnt been told at all about it. So she cancelled the card and was left 9 quid out of pocket, that was the first payment of the PPI. She hasnt worked a day since 1996 and I (husband) have been self employed since 1993. She still has the statement, thats pretty much about it though.
If she claims will she just get the 9 quid back for her efforts? If so it seems pointless going to the effort. Thanks for the advice.
