moving electric meter

An update: Definitely a no to moving it to the utility room. They won't move it to a room with running water.
So we have a choice of paying no doubt more money to move it further away to the other side of the house or leaving it where it is. Presumably although where it currently is will become a kitchen once the extension is built, it can stay there?0 -
Yes it can cost thousands and NO your electrician should not do it - the equipment does not belong to you, so you can't touch it. Plus of course, it's dangerous!
Andrew - maybe your best option is just to leave it where it is, then you don't have to involve the elec co and as long as you can work your extension around it.....
I see plenty in existing kitchens/utility rooms, but of course if you were starting afresh, then not the place to have them.0 -

Yep I think we'll probably do this. Its in a slightly annoying place but we can live with it especially if it can be moved by an electrician a few centimetres higher up the wall as suggested earlier in the thread...can anyone confirm that this is allowed?0 -
No it isn't, as it's not your property. No reputable sparky would touch it. And one that would, I wouldn't want near my house. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Thanks! Just checking... its hard to find the right info with differnt people saying different things
Ooops, apologies, that was me I thinkVery clear that sparkys can't change the wiring - but clearly they're not even allowed to move it physically either. Sorry for confusing the issue!

Hmmm have now decided we can't live with it where it is and have filled in the application to move it outside to a box on the outside wall. Hopefully its only going to be a few hundred not the thousands some talk of....0

Like I said, we're only paying £350. So clearly it's not always thousands...
I suspect it's in proportion to the degree of difficulty - so probably thousands if they have to dig new trenches or re-wire from overhead, etc. etc...0 -

Yes, they mentioned on the phone that the charges are between 200 and 500 but that was when we were still thinking of moving it a small distance inside... Presumably moving to an outside box is going to be more. Its overhead wiring though so no digging involved, hopefully that means a fairly easy job.0
