Returning to work - tax credits - ft/pt

Hello all,

I have a ten week old and am returning to work in sept, I did an online calculation and it tells me that we would be entitled to both working and child tax credits. However, my working friends tell me they aren't, and our situations are very similar.

My partner works f/t £26500
My full time wage is £33750 - I would like to return 3 days a week

Our child care is £54 a day
We have a mortgage outstanding £151k

It's hard to do an accurate application though - as I had full pay for two months, then half pay for three, then nothing...then back to work in sept at 3 days a week. How do I apply and get an accurate result?

Sorry blabbering on...to summarise - am I going to actually be better off going back p/t, will I be awarded any benefit, how do I do an accurate application..as if it's based on last years money, I would have been working f/t.

Thank you!
Trying to sort out the financial mess my younger years has left me in !!!

Above is actual worked out income for this and next yr (with mat pay etc adjustments)

    Plus my partners 26500

    Childcare is 648 a month

Do you think we will get tax credits?

I selfishly want to spend the time with our daughter...also if my partner was at home with her it would look like a bomb had gone off every day and nothing else would be done!

your partners income alone is too high for any tax credits before September, once you have childcare costs you may get a little help but it may be better if you could get childcare vouchers through work

looking at the numbers it looks like your income will be too high for any assistance
    tables are here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcredits/people-advise-others/entitlement-tables/work-and-child/work-pay-childcare.htm

just to add, they will disregard the first £2,500 of a reduction so will base your income as 26,500 + 17,116 + 2,500 = 46,116
  • Thanks all, it's a real shame that even with our wages we are going to struggle with me going back to work! No more children for us, we simply can't afford it!
