CEX's red tape with faulty goods

I've done a quick search and was unable to find another thread.
In a nutshell, I bought a used mobile phone from CEX on Friday and found it to be defective on Saturday morning. Attempted to return it today, 17/2 and the rude and unhelpful staff say that they have to "test it first", I invited them to just look at it as one of the faults was very obvious and he still insisted that it must be tested.
I eventually gave in and then they inform me that without a membership, I cannot even hand it over for testing. I reluctantly agreed to become a member but they wanted ID. I refused as I do not want to be in any database of theirs when all I want is a refund. I have the receipt.
I tried calling their head office via a difficult to find number I came across on Google and it directs you to e-mail via their web site.
I'm hopping mad right now and feel that my statutory rights have been trampled here.
Any advice?

They have. CEX cannot insist on joining any form of membership scheme just to enable them to confirm a fault.
How did you pay, and how much did you pay, for the phone?0 -

Surely if you presented your receipt then you have the right to a refund?
I know it's not a solution to your problem, but we've had similar problems with CeX on a far more minor scale. My partner uses CeX regularly to buy and trade games, but on a couple of occasions he's been refused a trade-in because the discs were scratched - they were actually like that at the point of sale. He didn't bother to check when buying them, as you'd assume they would be in full working order, but there's no way he could have caused the scratches as they only ever sit in the box or the console.
He's not overly bothered as the games in question didn't cost that much anyway, it's more that they're happy to sell damaged goods, but not trade them in. He's sent a strongly worded email to them, so we'll see what comes of it.0 -
I once took a phone in to CEX and they checked it.
When I went back a couple of hours later they rejected it because they found that one of the volume buttons didn't work.
So they did their job.
However, the prices of some of their things baffle me; I've seen items at or even above(!) their new price.0
