Wedding venues make a fortune so if they're paying their staff such low wages that they need tips then it's the venue and the staff working there's problem not yours!
  • I find this odd. Why would the planner care if you tip the waiting staff? I presume they are temps anyway through an agency or something.

Some of my friends worked in restaurants at Uni and didn't get to keep the tips so I would be careful about this. Even if it is going to the waiting staff are they going to track down all the ones who were working that night?
  • I would assume it goes in a pot & gets divided out to kitchen staff, cleaners, everyone working on the wedding. So that would include the planners, but who knows!

The best thing you can do is write a nice thank you letter/tripadvisor comment etc - worth way more than a tip.

If, after the event, you think service has been exceptional, you can always go back a few weeks later with an envelope for the staff.

Thank you, I think this is exactly what I will do.

    Thanks for your help everyone.

I would have replied "We will decide after our wedding if the service we received warrants any".

Apart from anything else, how can you make a decision on a tip before you've even experienced their efforts? And I would be wary of sharing any information in case someone got a bit huffy....
  • I think I would be tempted if asked to say that any tip would be thought about after receiving the service. You can't honestly decide how much to tip until afterwards. My other thought would be that for a Monday wedding costing £6500 they are having a laugh and should be able to pay their staff out of that.
