Need new pc laptop - Suggestions Please

Options
I am in the market for a new pc laptop. Reasonably small footprint but I want a keyboard and some oomph. Prefer Win 7 and maybe some basic Win and web design software bundled in. Not sure how much I should pay - thinking around £600? Suggestions please.

What screen size? All new laptops will now come with W8. Very few come with MS Office, so budget for that (or use Libre Office for free) plus your preferred web design programme.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I've just ordered a new laptop from pc specialist.

Not got it yet so can't recommend at the moment but can confirm they gave an option to buy with windows 7 rather than 8.1.

I have heard some horror stories about windows 8 like having no start button or menu and having to remember how to access the apps in lots of different ways, the consensus being it is more difficult if you are not a power user and its fine if you do complicated things all the time but not so good if you do not use these routines often enough to internalise them.

As I have trouble remembering my own name some days (all right I exaggerate but not much) I can see this being hopeless for me. Will stick to Windows 7 for now. (I still mourn XP and outlok express in particular.)

This looks interesting - with Win 7

That looks quite pricey for what you get. Newer Dell Inspiron 15s offer more for less money (but have Windows 8.1).

If you really want a Dell with Windows 7, then the Dell Outlet may offer better deals, albeit for computers that aren't brand new.
  • Don't be too scared of Win 8. My parents late 70's and 80 are using it now on a new touchscreen laptop bought at Christmas, and getting on fine. I set it to start up as desktop, and also made a folder on desktop with all programmes, to make it that bit easier. Also got them to write down some basic steps until they got the hang of it, which they always have should they forget. They have taken to it so well, that they are no longer using a mouse, which they did with their older laptop.....after me buying a new one, just in case. :D

People on here would be happy to help you with setting it all up, to make it that bit easier for you to use, if you don't have someone to do it for you. If you are willing to go with Win 8, you will have a much bigger choice, and can certainly get better specs than with the Dell you have suggested, for your money.

how about this. you would have to buy a operating system ontop BTW.

but this is the only one I can find that has a fast processor and large memory and a large hybrid SSD than ones I been looking at on other sites. if your willing to stretch the budget a bit further for a Operating system windows 8.1 takes it to 680.00 windows 7 is more expensive for some reason these days.
