Cat Insurance - Pet Plan / Sainsburys

Hi

I've got 2 insurance quotes for my kitten one from pet plan and one from sainsburys.

Both companies are underwritten by Alliance and will pay the vet direct.

The sainsburys quote is much better, but lots of people recommend pet plan, have you had insurance with sainsburys are they any good?

I also waded through all the cat insurance choices this time last year and eventually went with PetPlan.
They aren't the cheapest but neither are they the most expensive, but I would very carefully read the smallprint in the Terms & Conditions of all the insurances you consider.

I can't remember the details of the Sainsburys quote ...or any of the many others I got, but you have to be very careful about your choice as with some insurance, once they have paid for a condition or injury they will not pay again if the same thing occurs a second time ...or is even ongoing past a certain time or amount. Also choose the level of cover with the long-term in mind.

I chose PetPlan partly because they will cover recurring conditions or injuries for as long as the chosen cover is maintained, and partly because my Vet practice said that they have the least amount of problems with their claims.

I was very glad I did this too as not long after I took out the insurance my cat needed vet hospital treatment (and again later in the year) and the £70 excess each time was nothing compared to what I would have had to pay otherwise :eek: .The claims went through very quickly and easily.

It does not quite work like that - it depends on the vets if the do/do not accept direct claims.

Some vets do, some do not.

My vets will accept direct claims for fees over £350.00 and only from certain insurers. Another vets I know only accept direct claims for fees over £500.00. Some vets (smaller ones) do not accept direct claims at all. So check with your vet please.

All vets that do accept direct claims will accept PetPlan as this is a very well known insurer and the vets know they will be paid. They may well refuse to accept direct claims from other insurers.

I have 5 cats with PetPlan and one cat and one dog with Argos Platinum - never had any problems with direct claims for either but my claims were massive and both insurers are well known to vets I have used.

You need to make sure you take a for life (not per condition) policy to ensure the "pot" is renewed every year even for long term/life conditions. If you take a "per condition" policy and cat develops life long ilness - the cover will be eaten up and insurance will pay no more for THAT condition. So always a "for life" cover.

Thanks I'll check with my vet, but it seems safest to go with petplan classic for life cover.
