Missing files on DVD

Options
Just opened a brand new DVD (bought from Amazon) only to find it won't play on my laptop. Checked disc contents and there are only two folders, the Audio_TS and Video_TS ones. No other autorun or start or any of the usual files you'd expect to see.

Have I possibly been sold a counterfeit copy? It's not from a third party seller but Amazon direct.

That is correct -DVDs do not normally have autorun/start files, looks like you do not have DVD player software on your computer, go here http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html and download VLC player and install it.

Then run it, click on Media then Open Disc and point it to your cd drive.

    It should then play.

I already have VLC installed on my laptop and have no problem playing any other DVD or video files. This particular DVD just won't play for some reason. I've checked other DVDs in the same series and there are other files apart from the two video and audio folders on them.

Frankly Video_TS is the only folder you need, the DVD player should be expecting to find VOB files in there which contain the movie.

Anything else is either deprecated or off-spec.

if vlc won't play it, use media player classic with full codec pack

What computer model, what operating system, and is the DVD region specific?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

Drag the VIDEO_TS folder into the VLC playback window.

If that doesn't work, is the disc region protected?

Thanks for the replies but I've parcelled it up to return to Amazon now as they're sending me a replacement. Will see what happens when that one arrives.

Did you try the DVD in a DVD player, or only in your computer?
I suspect the new DVD will have just as many files on it and that the answer to your problem lies in some if the advice given in this thread.

I don't actually own a DVD player. It's rare I ever buy DVDs these days.

Chameleon, you ignored many important questions and pieces of advice in this thread and prematurely sent the disk back to Amazon.
Here's another question - what region is the disk?
Another question - what region is the DVD drive? It's 2 unless you know otherwise.
