Broadband Speed

I am with BT Broadband usually (in fact up yesterday) I get 5.3 -5.6 but today the most I have is 1.6

What is wrong and how do I correct this?

may seem a really silly suggestion but have you turned off the modems power for about 5 mins and rebooted it.

I did this earlier as pages were slow to load and it cleared it.

I did turn it off earlier (but not as long as 5 mins) and turned it back again staight away.

I usually leave things off and make a cuppa - have you checked the broadband speed online from more that one source and also looked at what background programs might be running ?

Are you connecting over wifi or by Ethernet cable?
What other devices use your Internet connection (e.g phones, tablets, tv)
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

Have you checked your phone line for audible noise?

Remove the faceplate from the master socket to expose the TEST socket behind it. Plug in a corded, analogue phone - a few quid from the likes of Argos - and dial 17070 option 2. This is the quiet line test, and the line should be silent. Any audible noise needs to be reported to your line rental provider as a fault.

Line faults can have a severe impact on broadband speeds.

Use the BT tester to see what it says. Do the second part of the test too. It could be that you had some problems and your profile speed has been reduced. If the problem is cleared your profile will eventually rise.
