Quick 123 Cashback question

Hi

I have an existing 123 current account but I do not receive cashback. My question is can i receive cash back for someone else? i.e a family member who pays a direct debit for gas/electricity or is cashback only applicable on accounts and direct debits registered in your name?

Also can cashback on the same bill be claimed from 2 accounts? In effect can 2 separate accounts potentially help to double the rewarded cash back?

I suspect that answer lies within the response to the first question, or at least probably exists somewhere in their literature but just off hand, would anyone happen to know?

Thanks

the name on a DD does not get checked. If you are happy to pay the DD for someone else, they just need to tell their supplier that they want to change their DD and give them your sort code and account number.

Not sure what you are thinking there. You can only have one DD for a given service.

I suspect most suppliers wil object to setting up a DD from an account which is not in the name of the bill payer.

You certainly cannot obtain double cashback since the cashback is calculated from the payment amount.
  • Of course, of course silly me! I understand what you both mean, i was foolishly thinking as a 123 account holder i might be able to claim cashback on an gas/electricity bill for a family member who pays via direct debit through Halifax. I overlooked the fact the Direct Debit cash back can only be accrued through bills linked to the actual 123 account itself. Seems so obvious now!

Oh well nevermind, i am glad you cleared that up, I didn't expect Santander to be that generous!! ;)

What if I have a 123 current account and I volunteer to pay by direct debit the utility bills of my parents, my children and any others I trust to re-imburse me? Is there any limit to the number of bills on which I can earn cashback?

I would, of course, share the cashback with the bill payers.

Why would all these people give up the ease of paying their bills so you can make money? They would need to pay you separately, causing them extra work. Why wouldn't they just have their own 123 instead (if they haven't already)?

You would also need to have enough money in your account to pay potentially varying amounts at different dates. If you don't, you get the default markers and pay the charges, and the people might get their service cut off. Remember, any communication about changes to the DD amount go to the person who gets the service, not to you.

Are all the people you have in mind happy with you knowing how much they pay for a given service? So that you get some extra money? What's in it for them?

All this so you get a few quid a month more? Seems a very desperate attempt to benefit from other people.

I paid the council tax for my late father's flat from my Santander 123 account, I received cashback for this, as well as cashback for my own council tax bills. I don't think utility companies mind who pays, as long as they get paid!

I don't think that comment was aimed at me. I certainly hope it wasn't.

What I was trying to suggest was that, if supporting elderly relatives, one might take responsibility for paying their bills, as cte1111 seems to have done. It might be better to help them to open their own 123 account but that's not always possible.

Or, if feeling benevolent to one's impoverished offspring, one might pay their bills for them.

So my position is one of support, not of making money for myself.
