Gas Smart Meters
We're hoping to do a garage conversion this year and knock the whole kitchen wall through. The problem is the wall we want to knock through has the gas meter smack bang in the middle if it in the garage.
I contacted our energy provider Eon to see if they move gas meters but they said that National Grid have to do it. When I looked on National Grid website it said that it would cost around £1,000 to move it.
Recently though it has been advertised that the energy companies are working towards swapping everyone to smart meters. If that's the case I don't want to pay out that kind of money only for our meter to be changed in the future anyway.
My mother-in-law has a gas smart meter. She rang British Gas and asked them to come and swap to one and they did. All you can do is register your interest with Eon and they have nothing planned in our area at the moment.
So I'm wondering is it worth swapping energy companies so we can speed up the change over or is there an easier way?

Even with having a new meter installed the energy company will only put it within 1 meter on the same wall. If you want it moving more than this you have to go through national grid, they are responsible for the pipework.0

You seem to be confusing a meter change with a meter move-two different jobs, and the latter is much more complex and won't be done for free.No free lunch, and no free laptop

If you changed supplier, you can request your meter moving upto 2m away, providing it is does not go through walls or somewhere unsuitable.
They/we would only move the meter, You would still have the main incoming gas supply in the same place as it is National Grid that moves this.
British Gas' gas smart meters only work in conjunction with an electric smart meter.0
