House insurance... Do I need to put business use down?

Hi,

I live with with my partner in my house, mortgaged and owned in my name only.

My buildings and contents insurance is due for renewal and I am looking at various comparison sites but I need some advice/opinions on the question which is always asked about business use...

I am fully employed, my partner is self employed and writes music and scripts from the spare room. No business visitors, no stock held etc, just writing and computer use for creating music etc. Partner does 'gigs' but these are at various venues all over the place.

If I get a single policy, in my name, would the above still classify as business use? Also, would you put it as clerical only, as there are no visitors or stock etc.

Many thanks

If there are no visitors and there is no business money, stock or equipment at the property, then I cannot see why you need to declare. From what you are saying, it is purely clerical and would be no different to any person who brings work home with them. e.g a Teacher bringing pupils work home to do marking.

If your partner is a well known script writer for movies, TV etc, then you should probably mention it to Insurers. I use to deal with some famous script writers for well know TV programmes and I cannot remember the Insurers we used applying any special terms. I suppose if she was JK Rowling writing the latest Harry Potter it would be a bit different.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • YES YES YES in my opinion - it does not matter that you do not have visitors to the house or that you carry stock or not - you need to advise the insurance company that a business is being run from your premises or they could use this to dismiss any claim if they find out.
  • From what you say it is clerical business use but you then mention that they do gigs.

What are these gigs? Are they paid or unpaid? Do they store any musical equipment in the house in connection with these gigs or is it all stored off site somewhere?

Hi, the gigs are performing at various bars, nightclubs etc all around the country. No musical equipment is stored, the venues provide all that. All that's used at home is a microphone and a keyboard linked to a computer. The gigs are paid and represent the majority of partners income.

What job title do you currently give your Insurers for your wife?

Hi, we aren't married. The mortgage and everything to do with the house is in my name only. The insurance will be in my name only.

He appears to tell the Insurers it's just him living there.

You're maybe a bit quick off the mark with that assumption but if true then I see trouble ahead in the event of a claim

    Hi, not at all!

I am using a comparison site, Put down living with partner, but the policy can go in my name only!

None of the websites ask about my partner job or even a name if the policy is in my name only...
