I would take photos before you start - if, when you move out, there is nay dispute over the state of the property you will have evidence of how it was at check in.

I would also write to the landlord with copies of the photos and ask him to remove all of the items as a matter of urgency failing which you will remove and dispose of them at his expense. CC the agent (if there is one) and give a specific deadline.
