Hi moneysavers,

Does anyone know any good websites (preferably if you have bought from them before) where I can buy exotic plants from?

Thanks,
Chris

    I know one where you can buy the seeds for exotic flowers, I've used it a fair bit. http://www.exotic-gardening.co.uk/
    We got some King Protea seeds from there and they were gorgeous.

    I'm thinking to myself "exotic" or I wonder if they mean they'd like the garden to look exotic/tropical?.

    Cordylines are great as a starter, mind you I hold the view that the red ones are more prone to frost etc. Half a dozen of them, in cheap pots, painted bright. Pebbles on the top of the compost give them that extra attraction and reflect light. You might like to add some of the reflective glass pebbles too.

    In shops such as Wilkinson or any market, you will see hardy palms that appear to be growing in very small amounts of hardened compost, (I can't think of their names), however they are able to sustain our winter.

    I've got a couple of chusan palms which don't do much, but help to create the feeling/look you may be after.

    What I forgot to say is that none of my palms etc are in the ground, they're living healthily in pots. Within this tropical area of mine, I have endless nautical items, ie 6ft boat, anchor,boat floats, fishing net,lobster pot.

    I realise that perhaps you are after something a bit more tropical/exotic as in banana trees etc, but for that information, we must await further posts.

    I've bought some lovely stuff from
    http://www.jungleseeds.co.uk/ and their sister company http://www.junglegardens.co.uk/
    When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

    I ordered some from jungleseeds.co.uk the other day and they turned up today. Great selection on their site, lots of interesting stuff to choose from.

    I've always been pleased with their stuff, and if you need advice they are really helpful on the phone as well.

    Couple of good companies worth researching for exotic plants are;

    The Palm Centre (my favourite, and already mentioned)
    Mulu
    PanGlobal
    Akamba (very good range - competing with the Palm Centre)

    Also, for info and specific advice on exotic gardening in UK - visit;

    growingontheedge.net

    You can grow a wide range of exotic plants in the UK, especially near the south. I'm in South Wales, and have (unprotected) Musa Bajoo banana's, Yucca Rostrata (fantastic looking - light blue leaves), Agave Americana, Cordylines, and a variety of palms - my favourite being Brahea Armata (again - light blue leaves).

    Ive certainly had success with a wide variety of palms, including (PS. Cant be bothered to check spelling);

    -Phoenix Canaerisis
    -Brahea Armata
    -Sabal Minor
    -Trachecarpus Fortunei (Chusan Palm)
    -Trachecarpus Wagnereis (Miniture Chusan Palm)
    -Butia Capitata (fantastic palm)
    -Butia Yatay (Taller trunk - little temperemental)
    -Butiagrus Nalbondinii (rare, and expensive - but closest to coconut palm in this country)
    -Washingtonia Filifera
    -Washingtonia Robusta
    -Chamaerops Humilis
    -Chamaerops Humilis Vulcano
    -Sago Palm (really a cycad)

    You really can be surprised what you can get away with in this climate, and only protection needed for extreem weather!
