Mounting a very large map

Dh bought me a great laminated world map for Christmas (which I love) but it is currently in a tube as I need to find a way to mount it.

I was hoping to do something like a foam core backing but not sure if it's possible with the size. The map is huge - around 2 metres across. Any guidance on how to start such a job?

In reasonably diy-skilled, so can build a frame if needed but would welcome some guidance as I've never approached a job like this before. I'd like to keep the mount as slim as possible as it will be on a corridor area that will get knocked if it's sticking out too much.

Thanks

  • Could you use 2 pieces of foam core then glue ssome strips of foam core length ways to span the join?

What about fixing it somehow to an 2440x1220 sheet of mdf and cut it size? You could then mount it directly to the wall. 6mm is around £12.50 or 9mm a few pound more in B&Q. If you're planning on sticking pins etc.. in it then mdf wouldn't be so good, you'd maybe need to look at something like Sundeala board but I don't think B&Q do it.

You can get foam board up to 2440x1220mm in 3mm, 5mm and 10mm thicknesses (possibly others). Slightly more expensive than MDF, but more lightweight so easier to hang, although at the same time, less robust.

I bought some of the frameless photo mounts and used the clips from them to hold a piece of 2mm glass onto a piece of 2mm hardboard.
Its just a case of getting the slots in the hardboard in the right place to hold the glass.

The map has been on the wall for 11 years now so I must have done something right :)

The girlfriends son had the same thing, the map was mounted on to MDF then bolted to the wall, huge map as well.
