Small car recommendations please

We've just traded in our two impractical, expensive to run cars in for one family car which will save us quite a few ££. My wife is on maternity for another couple of months but when she's back at work we'll need an additional car that's small and cheap. We'll swap between the two cars depending on who requires the big car on what day etc.

To get to work we both sometimes have to drive a reasonable distance on motorways so want something reliable. Our budget is about 2k, we ideally need rear doors and space for a child seat in the back. Other then that we're quite open to recommendations, looks and spec aren't particularly important.

Can anyone recommend some good makes/models to start our search with?

Small and cheap on fuel, Or cheap to tax or cheap on insurance or cheap to repair?

With £2000 to spend its easy to buy a good one or a bad one. Something that uses a little more fuel may cost more to service and in repairs.

Fiesta? Focus? But for less money you can buy a Mondeo.

I think we're looking for a good balance on running costs, the small car probably won't do a huge amount of miles so fuel economy is the least important. In an ideal world a car that's been owned by a little old lady and just driven to and from the shops would be what we want. We'd rather have a smaller car as our second parking space at home is quite awkward for big cars.

Fiesta then. But with that in mind. I would just keep my eyes open and mention that your looking for a cheap runaround.

I wouldnt say no to anything that came at the right price and had the potential to be reliable.
