Have you tried the £shop, i've had lots from there in the past.

Depends what you want, but some proper nurseries sell bare root hedging plants at this time of year, which may include a few plants we call shrubs.

For example my local nursery is selling wayfaring tree (viburnum) guelder rose (another viburnum) coloured stem cornus and rosa rugosa in two colours, all at around £1.50 - £2.50.

These are bigger than plugs and get where they're going faster too.

thanks yes thats more of the thing but mainly shrubs and not hedging. I have a totally bare garden with not one plant in and wanted to get some backbone stuff in at least. will keep on looking

The other place you might look is on Ebay, where some proper nurseries have shop fronts. These will often be in areas where passing trade is insubstantial, so mail order is the way to go for them.

You'll have to use your own judgement, but I've seen adverts there where I'd be happy to part with a small order of, say, £10 to test things out.

For £10ish you might get 3 x small shrubs about 20 cm tall, rooted into a 9cm pot. These would be better than plugs and there's a huge range compared with picking from hedging bare root stock.

You may still find some 9cm hardy shrubs that are being sold in multipacks or singly for use in winter pots & baskets. Look in the bedding section rather than the shrub area.

For £10 you should be able get 3 x 1ltr potted shrubs on multibuy at any good garden centre right now & over next few weeks.
